How this vest is made

Worked top down, in one piece, no side seams: each shoulder starts as a little strip, the back and front grow downward with neck stitches cast on between the shoulders, armholes are shaped by increases and cast-ons, then front and back join into one big round and the body is plain stockinette straight down to a ribbed hem. Neck and armhole ribs are picked up last.

Every step below carries your XXXL numbers, triple-checked, with stitch counts at each milestone. For the row-by-row choreography of the shaping rows, each step links to the exact section of the official pattern β€” which also has DROPS's video tutorials for each move (their terms ask that the full written pattern stays on their site, and their videos are genuinely good).

The fit check β€” read this before casting on

Stock XXXL is smaller than you like. Per DROPS's own diagram, XXXL finishes at 138 cm (54.3β€³) around the chest and β€” because the body tapers inward going down β€” just 130 cm (51.2β€³) at the hem. Your chest is 54β€³ (fine, zero ease) but your widest point is 60β€³ β€” the stock vest would be ~9β€³ smaller than your middle, guaranteed to hug and ride up. The modification below fixes it by reversing the body shaping. It's the difference between a vest you wear and a vest that lives in a drawer.

Chris's fit modification (replaces the body decreases)

Follow the pattern exactly until the front and back join into the round at 290 stitches (= 138 cm). Then, instead of the pattern's four decrease rounds:

Yarn cost of the mod: roughly +40–50 g over stock. Stock XXXL needs 500 g; modified β‰ˆ 545 g. Your 11 balls = 550 g β€” it fits, but with almost nothing spare: swatch, then frog the swatch and reuse the yarn, weigh at the checkpoints below, and if it runs tight, shorten the body 2–3 cm (each cm saves ~8 g at full width).

Materials & gauge

My gauge check

Swatch in stockinette on 4 mm, wash, lay flat, measure over 10 cm. (Then frog the swatch β€” you need the yarn back.)
